Apr 30: Cirque de Navacelles

 This beautiful canyon was carved by a river which doubled back on itself, creating a small hillock at the base of the valley which is home to the hamlet of Navacelles. The cirque is a Grand Site de France and provided a lovely outdoor day. 

We approached the canyon from the less-used north side visitors' center, where we took in the view.

Then we drove into the canyon stopping about halfway down to hike to the source of le rivière Vis, which was literally coming out of rock near the base of the canyon. The remains of a medieval mill sat above the spewing water.

After hiking back up to the car we drove the rest of the way down the canyon to the town where we had a great meal of galettes (buckwheat crepes) and strolled the walkways, then climbed the tiny hill in the center of the town.
